Spyshots: smart forfour Test Mule

Is smart the biggest failure by a German carmaker? No, because it’s French. And you know what else is French? This prototype, which is not a Renault Twingo that’s been turned into a panel van but a test mule for the next generation smart forfour. The last one was built on the Mitsubishi Colt , but this time smart is partnering with Renault for all their small cars.

Renault has been rumored to move the Twingo upmarket to take the place of the Clio three-door which will no longer be produced. It’s cheap A-segment car role will be taken by a new machine called the Towny, so technically, this might also be a Renault test mule as well.

However, the forfour might be based on the fourtwo this time and have the engine in the back. We really don’t know yet because smart has revealed nothing but strange electric car concepts recently.

Either way, this latest forfour is a risky endevour for smart, since the market is packed with potent rivals.
