It used to be the case that Rolls-Royce made a car and then sold it for a decade or more, followed by another car that looked basically the same to everybody but the connoisseurs. Now though, even they have to adapt to changing times and think about facelifts.
Launched in April 2009 at the Shanghai Auto Show, the Ghost saloon is a car that was named in honor of the Silver Ghost from 1906, but has its eye firmly fixated on the future. Now that they've revealed the two-door Wraith coupe on the same BMW-derived platform, it's time for the Ghost to get a new face.
The very first sighting of the Ghost facelift show not a lot has changed. The headlights are the biggest change, and they will give the car a distinctive look. The side mirrors have also been reshaped and at the back the exhaust pipes are now hidden.
The V12 engine will also be updated with more power and reduced emissions.
Power is transmitted effortlessly thanks to an eight speed, automatic ZF transmission. A plug-in version is possible in the future, but not likely until a couple of years from now.
As you all know, Rolls-Royce started testing the 102EX electric concept in 2011, but eventually decided not to offer such a car to its customers. Still, with the next Mercedes S-Class believed to receive an plug-in model as well, the luxury saloon market appears set for change.
The Ghost facelift could be introduced later this year, possibly just before the Frankfurt Motor Show.
