With the 2018 Mercedes-Benz CLS now in its advanced development stages, the prototypes now sport the production body details and since the camo has become lighter, we can get a taste of things to come. And after we showed you the standard third-generation CLS last month, the time has now come to return to this topic, as a fresh batch of spyshots brings the AMG Line under the spotlights.
Our spy shooters have come across a pair of 2018 CLS prototypes and we'll quickly go over the gray prototype, focusing on the black test car, since this sports the AMG Line goodies. And yes, if we take a look at the aggressive front fascia, it seems like somebody over at the three-pointed star is a Star Wars fan.
If we are to pay attention the what the rumor mill tells us, the presence of the AMG Line elements might just seem ironical. You see, the wildest rumors out there talk about the German automaker dropping the Mercedes-AMG version of the new CLS altogether.
The aim would be to prevent cannibalization, as Affalterbach is preparing to introduce the Mercedes-AMG GT Four-Door.
As such, the CLS could be deprived of V8 power. And, with or without the Mercedes-AMG badges, the current 63 models may be replaced by the CLS50 or the CLS55 moniker. The resulting machine would be animated by a mild-hybrid involving a turbocharged straight-six with at least 476 hp.
Regardless of the firepower, the new incarnation of the four-door coupe will be underpinned by the MRA (Modula Rear-Wheel-Drive Architecture) platform, which now serves the C-Class, E-Class and S-Class.
As for the interior, the previous set of spyshots has allowed us to take a peek inside the vehicle, one that was rather generous - we added a photo showing the center console and dashboard to the image gallery above.
Mercedes-Benz is scheduled to deliver the 2018 incarnation of the CLS in November, so you can expect to get more fresh details on the matter in the following weeks.
Meanwhile, here's a Nurburgring spy video that shows the 2018 CLS and the 2019 GT Four-Door sharing the track.
