Spyshots: Opel Adam Cabrio First Photos

In the world of small cars, there are models that are purely functional and there are those that make a fashion statement. MINI Hatch, Fiat 500, Citroen DS3 and Opel Adam – all these modes come in bright colors and are even available as convertibles. All, that is, except the Opel Adam.

The German flash has already announced made it clear it wants to change that when the unveiled the Adam ROCKS Concept a while back. Today, we have the first spy photos of the test prototype for the open-top Adam.

Getting past giggles caused by "topless Adam" jokes, let's take a loot at what's on offer. The Adam Cabrio is basically just a normal hatchback with a big sunroof. The doors, roof pillars and even the rear windscreen are intact. The only "convertible" part of the car is a fabric top that replaces the roof sheetmetal.

Both the Fiat 500c and Citroen DS3 Cabrio have fabric tops that roll all the way to the top of the boot. Opel's system is more like the one Renault used for the Twingo. While the obstructions make the Adam a worse Cabrio, they also make it a better car. More of the rigidity is kept, the folded fabric doesn't restrict visibility at the back and the boot opening remains an efficient hatch, not a small door like all of its rivals.

Since so little is getting changed on the Adam, we could see a debut at the Paris Motor Show in October, two years after the original made its debut at the same venue.
