Spyshots: Next Generation Mercedes SLK

Even if there still are a couple of years before the new generation Mercedes SLK make its official debut, the car is already here in the shape of a test vehicle, currently being pushed to its limits by the German manufacturer.

Visually, the heavily covered-up SLK presents us with more square headlights (with daytime running lights) than we are used to from the current version SLK. The next generation will no longer present us with the Formula 1 inspired, leaned back nose, instead going for a more aggressive look.

The mirrors, bigger than in today's version, were moved further back and are now situated on the doors and not in front of the side window. Otherwise, the overall lines of the next SLK seem, at least at first glance to remain within the design cues set by the existing SLK.

Being so far from its official debut, technical specifications about the new SLK are scarce to say the least. Still, rumors go that the new Z4 contender will make use of a four cylinder petrol engine, capable of developing at around 180 horsepower.

Obviously, an AMG version is to be expected, but that too is said to make use of a smaller supercharged engine (probably a V6), instead of the current 5.5l V8. Performance though is expected to be situated at about the same levels as in today's SLK AMG: 400 horsepower and 520 Nm of torque.

Currently, Mercedes sees its roadsters under threat from rival BMW's new release, the Z4. By the time it is officially here, it is to be expected that the new SLK will continue to be leaked and spied, to prepare its proper entrance to the market.
