In the era of the spy photographer, no car is ever going to be safe from prying eyes, waiting to scoop the most secretive of details. Likely to become the most important new car of 2013, Mercedes's brand new S-Class has been photographed out in the open during a shoot.
The new model was only supposed to be seen two months from now at a special event held in Hamburg, Germany on May 15th, but we've got the first exclusive photos before Mercedes could reveal a single pixel.
The new S-Class is without a doubt one of the most beautiful cars we've seen in recent years. The curves and undulations of its body aren't that easy to explain, though a good comparison would be one of Brancusi's sculptures that are on show at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Just look at those two converging lines down the side of the car or the elegant simplicity of that grille and tell us it doesn't deserve to be in Guggenheim!
The biggest complaint we heard with the old S-Class was the bulky rear end and the dated taillights. Both have been fixed and we'd say the Audi A8 and BMW 7-Series are in trouble.
The powertrains will have a little bit of the old and a little of he new. The best-seller will probably be the new S550, offered with a twin-turbo V8, but we think Mercedes will also offer a good V6 in the form of the twin-turbo S400 with 333 HP, a brand new engine currently in the rumor mill. Hotter S63 and S65 AMG models will follow, giving you the change to act like a Lion's Den judge on the road and Schumacher on the track. Diesels and even hybrids will also be offered, giving the new S-Class a clean reputation.
From what we've been hearing, Mercedes has developed a new small displacement V8. Initial details suggest this 4.0-liter twin-turbo produces 463 PS under the bonnet of the next C63 AMG, and we're really curious to see if they will use it in the S-Class as well.
