Land Rover has been working on a brand new Freelander for a while now, initially with an Evoque test mule and now fully-built prototypes, which has been photographed on numerous occasions.
However, these are our first spyshots of the new LR2/Freelander undergoing winter testing in Norther Sweden, where temperatures are well below those in the rest of Europe. New are details visible in these spyshots, the taillights which have rounded elements and look from the side similar to the Range Sport taillights.
The new Freelander is going to be tricky to class, but we think it will be a D-segment car measuring a little more than 4.6 meters in order to differentiate from the Evoque, Land Rover's current best-seller, which stands 4,365mm from bumper to bumper and is classed a compact SUV.
The engine range will almost certainly include only 4-bangers in diesel, petrol or hybrid units, all mated to ZF nine-speed automatics optimized for soft-roading with stronger first and second gear. The kerb weight will be reduced to somewhere in the region of 1.6 tons by using more high-strength steel and aluminum.
