Taking older components and platforms and turning them into budget Dacia models was a stroke of genius on Renault's part. These cheap cars are selling by the bucketload in Europe, especially the Duster which just received a facelift.
Tempting as it is to say that we are looking at the Dacia Logan facelift, this is probably not what our latest spyshots are showing. It's most definitely a budget sedan, but there are key differences, plus it's too early in the Logan's life cycle for a new model to arrive.
Our mystery prototype is not a Renault, but it has the 16-inch alloy wheel that come with the Renault Clio 4. It's also got different door handles, different rear door windows which aren't split in two and the roof is more sloped. In addition, the design is all wrong for a Dacia model.
The front grille is trapezoidal and connected directly to the headlights. We think this is a Datsun sedan a larger one which could be developed for markets that have emerging characteristics, but expect a larger body than in India.
Nissan's plans for Datsun include the Go hatchback, launched in India on March 19th, followed by the Go+ MPV, which will be launched by the end of the year. A third model will be even smaller than the Go, based on the Redi-Go concept showcased at the Auto Expo 2014 that took place in February.
The Nissan-owned automaker has released a sketch of the new model, which is supposed to provide customers with "an engaging driving experience, peace-of-mind ownership and accessibility at the right and transparent price".
Launched in 2012, The Dacia Logan II is built on the M0 platform, which is derived from the B0. We think this is what underpins the mystery sedan du jour.
