Ford CEO Alan Mulally has said the B segment is crucial for the company's global success. This Goldilocks car size is ideal for European and South American markets and can provide affordable transportation in China as well.
Currently, this market segment is only occupied by a few models, the most important being the Fiesta hatch and sedan models, but recently also joined by the EcoSport crossover, a replacement for the old Fusion.
We know Ford is looking to diversify, and this car could be the next big thing. Our spy photographers captured this camouflaged prototype which has had us scratching our heads for the past hour.
We don't know for certain if it's a Ford, but it certainly look like it has that type of grille and a typically-Ford trapezoidal insert in the lower rear bumper. Our spies don't know what it is either, but say it's slightly smaller than a Fiesta and has German license plates from Cologne (K-) where Ford has a huge test center.
Some have suggested this is a replacement for the Ka, and to a degree that could be considered accurate. It clearly is a model designed to be cheap, like the original Ka was, but the nothing else identifies it as a successor.
This leaves us with the only conclusion: it's a brand new nameplate designed to offer affordable motoring. The Fiesta isn't exactly the people's car it used to be once you go for a decent trim level, and maybe Ford has seen a new niche forming.
