Renault engineers have just added more fuel to the rumor mill with this mystery test mule spotted undergoing winter testing in Northern Sweden.
It's clearly based on the Fluence sedan, but has widened hips, indicating a different tacks. The Fluence is actually a Korean-developed car built by Samsung that replaced the Megane sedan. We don't think the car they are working on is based on the Fluence. There's not much else we can learn here, but we can tell the prototype is still front-wheel drive.

With a wheelbase of exactly 2.7 meters, the Fluence is close to the Laguna's 2.758m current wheelbase. There have been rumors that Renault will rethink their D-segment sedan in the face of diminishing sales, some going as far as to turn it into a crossover.

With the success of sister company Nissan's Qashqai, it's tempting to think the new vehicle will be a crossover, which would explain the raised body of the test mule.
