A MINI Countryman with beefed up wheel arches and the Cooper S engine undergoing testing - could it be a JCW GP edition? According to our man with a long lens the answer is “no”, as this is actually a MINI MPV called the Traveller.
The vehicle will be a 5-seater van/MPV based on the platform of the Countryman, which in turn was derived from the Cooper. It really is amazing to see what they are turning the British mark into, and we don’t mean that in a good way.
Rumor has it we might still get a chance to say “don’t build it” as the Traveller will be previewed as a concept under the name Spacebox, with production to start in 2014 once this gets the go-ahead.
The Traveller will have a wider body to make more room for the passengers. We can also expect a big overhang at the back for added luggage room and proper folding rear sits.
MINI’s model range being offered could expand to double its current size over the next 10 years. Right now, the fait of the only true MINI, the Rocketman, hangs in the balance, which is a shame considering how the brand came to be.
