Mercedes AMG's boss has made it clear that if a corporate case can be built for an AMG version of either the B-Class or GLA-Class, he is more than willing to make it. It seems that the GLA 45 AMG is going to become a production reality, since a prototype has already been sent out to undergo arduous testing at the Nurburgring test track.
The test vehicle is heavily covered in camouflage, which doesn't allow us to see if the GLA is every bit as beautiful as the A-Class and the CLA-Class sedan. But it's believed the smallest crossover Mercedes produces will make its debut as a concept car soon.
But let's focus on the AMG version here first . It's going to be powered by the same powerful new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, the M133, producing 360 PS (355 hp) and 332 lb-ft (450Nm). That unit will send its power through a new seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and an upgraded all-wheel drive system created especially for front-wheel drive cars built on the MFA platform.
The only true rival it's going to have is going to be the Audi RS Q3, which has a turbo-5 detuned to just 306 hp.
The GLA will make its debut as a concept at the upcoming Shanghai Auto Show, before showing up as a production model in Frankfurt later this year. Hopefully, that's where we're going to the the hot AMG version as well. But since Nurburgring testing has just begun, it's unlikely to be available before 2014.
