Last month, we showed you a MercedesCLA 220 CDI reaching a top speed of 242 km/h. That car will blow everybody's preconceptions that a front-wheel drive sedan is not a true Merc. But as much as we like the statement and the looks, there were a few things wrong when we sampled the Made in Hungary magic, all of them concentrated in the back.
Mercedes engineers are currently working on the cure for what ails the CLA, namely a Shooting Brake version that will offer better rear headroom and a marge cargo area.
Codenamed the X117, this glorified estate model will offer the same lineup of four-cylinder turbo engines, hopefully including a couple more to fill the entry-level void at the bottom of the range.
The most interesting part about this test prototype is not the engineering. There are always going to be cheaper and more practical cars on the market, like a Skoda Octavia or a VW Passat. The CLA Shooting Brake is defined by its wonderful looks, from its crisp lines, to the special grille and keen eyes. If this car was a gift, it would be like one of those expensive watches that come in a full-leather box with gold-plated lettering.
