A short time ago, Mercedes Benz unveiled the next chapter in the AMG’s division’s history. After 45 years of building saloons that go fast, they are now going to make the first small hatchback powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo engine producing somewhere around 330 horsepower.
The car in question is the A45 AMG, based on the the new A-Class. But the platform that is used by the A-Class is flexible enough to be turned into a sedan, rumored to be called the CLA, but also named the BLS and the CLC according to various sources. Whatever its name, this will also have a hot version most likely called the CLA 45 AMG.
For the first time, a prototype for the baby AMG sedan has been spotted on the road, as it was undergoing testing, with huge wheels and large exhaust revealing its performance ambitious.
The powertrain will be made up of a 335 PS 2.0-liter turbo AMG engine mated to an AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox and HELDEX all-wheel drive system.
This sedan will most likely be offered in the States, unlike the A-Class, so expect better legroom and maybe even a softer ride. It will be quite interesting to see how customers will react to a go-fast AMG four-door that doesn’t make V8 sounds. However, we do have confidence in the fact that they will engineer a great exhaust note, one which we’ll surely be sampling in a long tunnel when the car makes its debut, most likely next year.
