Spyshots: Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Reveals E-Class Dashboard, Lifts Its Hood

For whatever reason, Mercedes is working on two costly four-door coupe models that will debut at the same time. There's the CLE-Class we showed you yesterday, which will debut in November, and the AMG GT 4-Door that's coming out in January 2018.

Ahead of that is most likely a Detroit Auto Show debut, we caught up with the AMG GT 4-Door prototype in Germany. Despite a name that suggests it's based on the GT coupe, the car is very clearly borrowing its goodies from the E-Class.

For example, this prototype has the same extra-wide screens as the E-Class, and we know this because there's even a picture of the sedan being displayed. Of course, the finished product will have its own graphics, but it's interesting how Mercedes abandoned the cocoon-like atmosphere of the GT for a giant iPad screen to bring out Instagram and Snapchat.

The model is aimed squarely at very expensive German rivals, such as the Porsche Panamera Turbo and Audi's RS7. Like those two, the GT 4-Door is actually a 5-door with a trunk that opens like a hatchback. Also like those two, power will come from a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, though the expected 600+ HP output will outclass them.

This one has the typical rectangular exhaust pipes of the AMG brand, but we've seen other examples testing with round smokestacks, which suggests there will be more than one version. Will Mercedes make a diesel performance version? Are they going to make a hybrid? The Germans are predictably tight-lipped about their expensive new toy, so our only clue is the preview concept which did have a hybrid setup with over 800 horsepower.

Unfortunately, the angle of the photo doesn't allow us to see the engine, but the GT 4-Door even looks sexy with the hood up, which is a good sign. There are no charging ports, so at least for the time being, there won't be an electrified version.
