The BMW X1 might have an outdated platform, lots of NVH if you opt for the diesel and a crude radio, but it's also one of the most successful ideas they ever had. In Europe, it's the most successful compact crossover on the market, while over in America this is the cheapest and thus best sold model, better even than the 3er. It's also the first car they fitted with the N20 and probably the only model in its class that ca drift.
While it's only been available in America for a year or so, the X1 is actually one of the oldest cars they have. Its E84 platform is shared with the old 1 Series. A replacement has just begun being tested in Germany. Codenamed the F48, this is going to be based on the UKL platform.
That means it's going to share its architecture with the 1-Series GT, codenamed F45. Base models will have front-wheel drive.
This will allow for better packaging, no step in the middle of the rear bench, a deeper cargo area and longer passenger compartment.
The engines will be mounted transversally and will belong to the new modular family. MINI has already announced a 1.5-liter 136 PS 3-cylinder and a 2.0-liter 192 4-cylinder which are likely to go into the car.
