Combining the old with the new is something Cadillac has been able to do quite over the past year. Two brand new sedans and one coupe have been launched in quick succession, changing people's perceptions of the brand. The traditional GM mantra of offering more legroom and cargo space than anybody else has meat up with a brand new aluminum chassis technology and now challenges BMW and Mercedes.
But going after the German luxury crown is impossible unless your army packs the big guns, the siege weapons that dominate everything else on the battlefield. This is Cadillac's flagship battlecruiser in the making spotted for the first time while undergoing road testing.
The model that no-doubt will take on the Mercedes S-Class and BMW 7 Series has no name yet. It's internal code "O1SL" is not befitting such an interesting piece of American engineering. Until Cadillac actually shows this car in the second half of 2015, most will say that this is a production version of the Elmiraj. We're also likely to hear rumors that state the "Fleetwood"name will be revived, or that the LTS name will be used after being trademarked.
Earlier reports suggested that Cadillac was going to use the amazing design flare of the Elmiraj to create a four-door coupe. However, the sharply angled rear pillars and tall greenhouse suggests this is a true sedan. It that a shame? Not in our opinion, after struggling with rear visibility and headroom in many four-door coupes that we tested. Cadillac is rumored to also be working on a true coupe or convertible version of this flagship. Eldorado vs S-Coupe comparison anyone?
Nothing is known about the engine that powers Cadillac's future largest car. It could be that a production version of the Elmiraj concept's twin-turbo V8 is coming. However, judging from the two small exhaust tips, we'd say this test mule has something much smaller. Whatever the engine, it will be mated to a 9-speed, or possibly a 10-speed, transmission.
GM has worked hard to change Cadillac's image for the better, and technology ranging from active safety sensors to noise cancelation and impressive infotainment functions will be added.
