As the world is still holding its breath waiting for BMW to launch its first front-wheel-drive vehicles, the Bavarians are hard at work, trying to deliver what they promised: the same BMW feel with a different transmission.
Based on the UKL platform, the upcoming 1 Series GT will be available in 2 variants as our latest spyshots seem to indicate. Our photographers caught the two next to each other in Germany, near the Nurburgring.

As you can see, the 7-seater is considerably bigger than its brother. It has a longer rear window and a steeper tailgate, whilst the roof line is also higher, to accommodate the extra passengers.

The 5-seater has a smaller appearance with a lower center of gravity and a more cosy feel. At the moment, the prototypes seem to be very much in their first months of testing so the exterior design is probably still under development.

As for the technical details, the UKL platform will be using the new B38 3-cylinder 1.5-liter turbocharged family of modular engines, resulting in cheaper production costs and a more efficient production line. Furthermore, new gearboxes will be developed for the new cars that will, most likely, be using diesel 3-cylinder units as well.

Designed as a response to Mercedes-Benz's B-Class, we figure the 5-Seater will be comparable in size with the Volkswagen Golf Plus whilst the 7-seater will be more likely to get close to the measurements of Ford's S-Max. The official launch is expected somewhere near the end of 2014.
