With just a few strips of camo covering its hood dome and lower fascia, a black BMW M4 Convertible has been spotted testing in Sweden. This is our best glimpse the next member of the ever-growing BMW compact car family, a performance drop-top that will arrive later this year.
Based on the new 4 Series convertible, the new M4 model will bring comprehensive changes in the powertrain department. The engine you listen to with the top down is a new 3-liter twin-turbo, a downsized unit with much better performance than the 4-liter V8 it replaces. The engine will work with a standard six-speed manual or an optional seven-speed DCT.Its power will go to the limited slip diff at the back, pushing the from 0 to 100 km/h in about 4.3 seconds. Of course, power means nothing without control, so all that comes on top of a totally redesigned suspension, designed for maximum stiffness and traction.
All this is combined with an elegant if a little bit understated German design and one of the most amazing folding metal roofs in the business. It will be interesting to see how well the top-down formula works with a smaller engine.
Until the new Mercedes C63 AMG arrives, finally bringing a convertible version, the M4's biggest rival will be the dated Audi RS5 and its blunt but powerful 4.2-liter naturally aspirated mill.
