As the days get warmer and warmer, the track gets dryer and dryer, and so test prototypes descend upon Europe's legendary test track to see what they're made of. A covered up BMW i8 prototype recently made its first appearance at the Nurburgring test track.
It's not like we've never seen the i8 before, but we were always more than curious to see what a car like this looks like going full throttle. The i8 is an amazingly interesting and complex hybrid, powered by an electric motor at the front and a gasoline engine at the back.
As such, it doesn't need that much air coming through that elongated kidney grille is mostly covered up.
Combined, the turbocharged 1.5-liter engine and the electric drive should produce somewhere just shy of 400 horsepower. That translates into 0 to 100 km/h in about 5 seconds and an electronically limited to 155 mph (250 km/h). The car will be able to run in gasoline-only, electric-only, or hybrid propulsion.
Expect the i8 to debut about a year after the i3 makes its production appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September. Until then, only these BMW test pilots will get to enjoy this car.
