BMW is taking advantage of the cold weather these days, testing the prototype version of the i3 electric vehicle with our spy photographers recently meeting the car in Munich. We'll remind you that BMW introduced the “i” eco sub-brand late last year, with the company announcing the i3 city vehicle, as well as the i8 supercar.
Both will be built at the company’s Leipzig site and will use an architecture comprised of an aluminum chassis and a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) passenger cell. The i3 will be powered by electric motors delivering 130 hp, with rumors indicating that an optional range-extender BMW motorcycle engine will also be available.
The vehicle is expected to offer a 0 to 62 mph time of under 8 seconds and a top speed of 150 km/h (93 mph). Both the i3 and the i8 are scheduled to arrive on the market in the course of the following year, but until then we’ll have many occasions to talk about them.
