The BMW i3 was already shown in concept form earlier this year, but now we have very clear and crisp photos of a prototype that’s much closer to the production form. The glass in the doors and boot lid have obviously disappeared, but the good news is that the suicide door configuration with no pillars in the middle has been kept.
The i3 is supposed to be an all-electric vehicle which was developed based on the research conducted using the MINI E. It’s expected to offer a driving range of between 120 to 150 kilometers (74 to 93 miles).
However, BMW did say that some customers wanted more range out of their electric city cars, and as a result this test prototype is likely fitted with the optional Range Extender, the REx, which allows the electric driving range to be increased.
There is no official word on the matter, but the range extender is expected to be a motorcycle engine from the Motorrad BMW division.
