It looks like BMW is going to keep some of the design cues used on the current F01 7 Series and use the same kind of taillights on the new model. Judging by our most recent spyshots, the upcoming G11 7er will have the same kind of taillights, split between the boot lid and the body of the car.
However, big differences are noticeable. The design looks more rounded off and LED technology is expected to show up. Talking about LEDs, our reliable source inside BMW tells us that the new flagship will be sporting this technology in its headlights, as standard. That means that laser lights, like the ones introduced on the i8, will become an optional feature, probably at a different price tag too as you have to pay around €10,000 for them right now on the hybrid plug-in sportscar.
Since we’re talking headlights, we should also mention that the design of the ‘illuminators’ will change according to the brand’s new image. As we can make out from these spyshots, they will most likely be connected to the kidney grilles, as seen on the most recent models. The corona rings will also be kept but with a slightly different design.
The G11 7 Series will be the most technically advanced car ever made by BMW, as expected. Its body will be made using plenty of aluminum and CFRP wherever possible, to keep the weight down. According to early estimated, the new models will be around 200 kg (440 lbs) lighter than their predecessors, when fitted with the exact same options.
On-board technology will also be of the highest grade, including advanced parking assistance, next-gen drive assist, Wi-Fi hotspot capabilities and Bowers & Wilkins audio that, most likely, will be replacing the Harman / Kardon system.
Under the bonnet we’ll get to see the entire line-up of B-family engines, most likely even starting with a 2-liter 4-cylinder unit. This one though, will probably be used in conjunction with an electric engine for a plug-in version of the 7 Series. One unit will make an exception and that’s the 6-liter V12 on the 760i that will be just upgraded not replaced.
As a fun detail, for the first time in the 7 Series’ history, bi-color wheels will be available as well as panoramic sunroofs. Expect the new model to come out somewhere during the summer of 2015, as production is expected to begin next fall.
