While Mercedes-Benz prepares the world for the official release of its new S-Class full-size luxury sedan, BMW is still developing the new 7 Series. The spyshots we're looking at today show us the future G11 7er, scheduled for release somewhere in late 2015, early 2016.
The Bavarian Flagship will be having a new look but, since the car is currently at the beginning of its development process, most design features will probably be changed. The current vehicle is a mule, so don't be fooled by the body parts belonging to the current 7 Series.
The hood and the front kidney grilles look different and so does the trunk lid. Also, judging by the heavy camouflage around the C-Pillar, BMW might be revising the signature Hoffmeister kink.
Even if the exterior design will not be drastically changed, the technological improvements will be important. BMW learned a lot from developing the new i3 and i8 models. Extensive usage of CFRP (carbon fiber reninforced polymer), aluminum and carbon fibre is expected in order to keep up with the ever-tightening emission regulations.
A lighter 7 Series also means better fuel efficiency and the possibility of fitting smaller engines. If in the past, fitting a 4-cylinder engine on this kind of a car seemed to be a sacrilege, these days it seems more and more probable.
Furthermore, the new G11 7er might even be the first one with hybrid technology in the model's history. This new system might be the result of BMW's joint venture with Toyota which has to be paying off by now, considering the renewal the 2 companies just signed.
Lighter construction also means better handling, braking and acceleration. This allows us to assume that we might be receiving a new, M model, called M7 starting with the new platform. This would have to be equipped with, at least, a turbocharged V8 engine, similar with the one used on the M5 and M6 models. Better yet, this would prove to be a tough competitor for the competition's Audi S8 and Mercedes-Benz's S63 AMG.

The new iDrive system might include self-parking features and traffic warning apps while also improving navigation maps and real-time weather updates.
