Spyshots: BMW ActiveHybrid 3 Series

BMW is preparing to launch a new generation of the 3 Series and one of the most important novelties brought by this will be the addition oh a hybrid model. The fact that we are talking about an eco vehicle doesn’t matter - BMW wants the car to suit its “ultimate driving machine” motto, so the company was recently out testing the car on the Nurburgring, with our spy photographers witnessing everything.

You can tell that we are dealing with a hybrid by the stickers on the sides and the rear of the car, which have been used before for other hybrid BMW vehicles.

The details about the powertrain are scarce at the moment, but the car is expected to be powered by a combination of a six-cylinder mill and an electric motor. However, we can’t exclude the possibility of the car using a four-cylinder petrol engine as part of the hybrid powertrain.

However, we can be almost sure of one thing: BMW won’t go down the same confused (big power, big weight, big price) pathway it had chosen for the X6 ActiveHybrid, which was recently discontinued.

The 2013 BMW 3 Series is expected to arrive late next year, with the present development, which should use the “ActiveHybrid 3” designation, set to arrive soon after the launch of the regular versions of the car.
