BMW’s decision to rename its two-door variant of the 3-Series, a car which became the 4-Series, was a mildly-controversial one. We had just gotten used to the idea of the upcoming coupe 3-Series being named differently and slightly different in terms of styling, but we weren’t really expecting them to make a four-door version out of it.
Yes, that’s right! They made a coupe out of a four-door, so that they could then turn it back into a four-door and charge future customers extra for the privilege of driving what will always be a 3-Series. The car is expected to be called the 4-Series Grand Coupe, and it will be just a four-door version of the regular two-door car.

In-keeping with brand tradition, and the new 6-Series’ transition from coupe to sedan, we say the two cars will be identical in terms of styling, but with one extra set of doors in the middle. We’re not really convinced by the whole idea, and instead of simplifying its range of models, BMW is making things overly-complicated, and offering lots of cars which look, drive and feel pretty much the same - some may like that, we’re not so sure, though.
