The future of the 3-Series model range holds many mysteries for BMW, but most news desks operate under the assumption that the next compact coupe and convertible models will arrive under the 4-Series name. They will be followed shortly after by a four-door coupe called the “Gran Coupe” or GC for short, a scheme borrowed from the F12/13 6-Series.
This prototype recently spotted going round the Nurburgring track in German is the 4-Series Gran Coupe, a rival to some extent to the Audi A5 Sportback and Mercedes CLA. But given the size of the new 3-Series platform and the fact that this is probably even longer, it really doesn’t have an equal.
Under-hood, we will find the familiar range of motors, most likely to include only two petrol and two diesels from launch. BMW will also launch a multi-turbo straight-six M4, which should make about as much power as the old M3 but more torque.
