We're going on a limb here in saying that you've already seen and heard about the new S1. In case you didn't we can still tell you it's the smallest S model ever made, measuring about 4 meters and packing 231 hp of quattro-harnessed power.
This is one of the most hotly anticipated cars in its segment and is already available for order from about €30,000 in Germany. That's basically Golf GTI money, but just like in the case of the Golf there needs to be a model that slots underneath that, offering plenty of power without the lower suspension.
The current Audi A1 range already has that. It's called a twin-charger engine, a tiny 1.4-liter which produces 185 PS, being similar in setup to the current Polo GTI. Testing for the A1 facelift range is taking quite a while, which leads us to believe new engines are being developed. This test prototype spotted in Scandinavia is wearing twin pipes on the left side, which means it's being powered by a mid-to-high output engine. Since the Polo GTI is rumored to drop its 1.4-liter for a bigger 1.8 turbo with a single turbo, we think the same will happen with its Audi sister model.
Thus, we believe the top-spec A1 facelift model coming later this year will have a 1.8 TFSI engine, a first for the smallest of Audis. We believe the power rating will be 192 PS and 250 Nm of torque. If we're right about the engine, this model will be able to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.8 seconds, making it faster than a Ford Fiesta ST.
