Sketchy described in previous reports and spyshots, the newest Mini creation is now closer than ever to becoming a reality as, apparently, the crossover Mini SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) got its final name. Dubbed the Crossman (previously known as the Colorado), the new vehicle is poised on being a hit, given its smaller cousins' success.
Aimed at the male segment of Mini fans, who wanted a more masculine version of the current Minis, the Crossman will not be a pure bread off-roader, despite the use of an all-wheel drive system and its obvious higher road stance than seen on the current models.
Scheduled for release sometimes in 2010 (possibly even late this year), the Crossman will set itself apart from what we are now used to see exiting the producers assembly lines. Despite the fact that it looks like your everyday Mini, the undercarriage of the small SAV sings another song than its smaller versions.
The wider track, its raised suspension, the larger wheels and tires, the above mentioned all wheel drive system and its increased height will make for an entirely new vehicle.
Engine wise, the four door vehicle is rumored to use the engines currently found on the Cooper and Cooper S: a 1.6l four cylinder, 120 horsepower unit and the turbocharged 171 horsepower powerplant.
The Crossman will be the first Mini to be built outside the UK. The SAV will go in production in Austria, in Magna Steyr's facilities. The first unit is expected to roll out, as we said sometimes in 2010, but we are sure we will learn more of the Crossman in the months to come.
