Update: We've added more photos of the same that have been taken from close up. The car has white paint, full-LED headlights and the AMG pack, basically everything you want on your Mercedes convertible
From where there was only the CLK Cabrio a few years ago, Mercedes is soon going to offer three different rag-top models, joining the C-, E- and S-Class model ranges. Of the trio, we're looking at the smallest and most affordable, the A205 C-Class Cabriolet, seen here undergoing road testing in Germany.
Even though it's fully camouflaged, we can still see that Mercedes engineers are working on a different setup to the ones tested in 2014. The flared front bumper with extra-large air intakes, plus the massive alloy wheels indicate there's a connection the guys in Affalterbach, AMG.
It's tempting to think this is an extreme C63 AMG Cabrio, built to rival the BMW M4. But in fact it's probably not even the C450 AMG because the exhaust tips aren't split in the middle. That's why we can tell you this is the AMG Line body kit, an optional feature that will be available on less powerful cars, like the C250 diesel and C400.
We'd stop way short of calling the AMG Line pack "fake". Not only does it bring progressive steering with better feel and a shorter rack, but the suspension is lowered and, of course, the exhaust sounds much better.
Of course, we don't need to tell you that the A205 C-Class Cabrio will be base on the same platform as the W205 sedan, sharing its engines, features and powertrains. One of the most interesting is a 3-liter twin-turbo V6, which will deliver 333 HP for the C400 4Matic model and 367 HP for the C450 AMG.
All of the other engines will be turbocharged inline-4 ones, starting with the 2-liter petrol that will be available with 184 hp on the C200, 211 HP on the C250 and 245 HP on the C300. Diesel options will range from the 136 HP C200 d to the 204 HP C250 d, all using the same 2.1-liter block. Depending on the model, these will either be paired to a 6-speed manual, the old 7G-Tronic or the latest 9-speed auto.
