The MFA (Modular Front-wheel-drive Architecture) platform began as an experiment, but it has since become a real goldmine for Mercedes-Benz.
This is why its next iteration, the MFA2, will include a lot more compact models, including a true sedan for the first time.
You've read that right, the C-Class will no longer be the baby Mercedes-Benz sedan, its place being taken by the upcoming 2019 A-Class Sedan.
Previewed by the adequately named Concept A Sedan, the future model is one of eight FWD-based models that will use the MFA2 platform. We must remind you that Mercedes-Benz has only five front-wheel-drive cars in its current lineup.
Oddly enough, the 2019 A-Class Sedan will encompass two out of those eight models, since a long-wheelbase version specifically tailored for the Middle Kingdom is also expected.
Almost identical to the 2018 A-Class hatchback from the front to the rear doors, the sedan will also have a nearly identical interior, as you can probably guess from the interior spy shot in the adjacent photo gallery.
The prototype caught by our spy photographers is probably a high-specced version, since the dashboard display is fully digital, just like the one on top of the center console.
Expect a similar array of engines as the hatchback, with an assortment of 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter turbocharged four-pots across the range, coupled to either a six-speed manual or a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Lesser models will only be available in FWD, while higher-powered ones will come with 4Matic all-wheel-drive as either an option or as standard.
There are rumors about a 9-speed double-clutch gearbox currently in development, but only the higher-powered versions may get it. An A45 and A40 Sedan are also in the works, to fend off any potential attack from the Audi S3 Sedan and RS3 Sedan.
The model should be unveiled toward the end of 2018 and is likely to be available in both Europe and the U.S. Its long-wheelbase version will probably be a China-only model.
