Spyshots: 2019 BMW 8 Series Prototype Has Production LED Lights

It seems that like many modern BMWs, the 8 Series flagship will have an active shutter system for the kidney grilles. That's because when we recently spied a production coupe, you couldn't see anything through them.

However, the real highlights of these spyshots are the headlights. It's the look BMW is going for with all its cars these days, keeping the idea of the original ring but making it geometric. Even with the camouflage on, somebody who knows nothing about cars will look at this and tell you it's a BMW.

We're looking at an M Sport or M Performance model here. You can tell because of the blue brake calipers, the protruding side skirts and the enlarged air intakes of the front bumper.

The letter M plays a crucial part in every BMW launch these days. For example, the most talked about and reviewed X3 is the M40i. And even though there's no performance version of the 6 Series GT, most of the press photos that are out there depict the M Sport package.

I think something rarely talked about these days is that retro is cool, including when it comes to cars. The 8 Series is BMW's throwback to the 90's era. The original was, together with the 7 Series, one of the first BMWs to have a multi-link rear axle.

Because virtually nobody had an 8 Series, yet every BMW fan knows about it, they're smartly bringing back the nameplate. At the same time, the Bavarians are going to boost prices significantly over the 6 Series coupe that's being replaced. Rumor has it that Mercedes is thinking about a retro move of its own, switching from the S-Class coupe name to the SEC. What next, a Porsche 928 and a Toyota Supra? Wait... nevermind.

As far as the powertrains are concerned, BMW has filed a bunch of trademarks that include “850,” “860,” and “M850.” There's even a coupe that suggests 2.0-liter engines will be used in something like an 830i. But we'll believe it when we see it.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
