Spyshots: 2017 Subaru Impreza Gets More Premium-Looking Interior

The Subaru Impreza just received minor 2016 upgrades, but they are planning to launch an all-new model next year. Like the Honda Civic, it will be so improved that it will put everything that came before it to shame.

We've seen the 2017 Impreza in spy photos before. This prototype may even be the XV crossover model underneath the camouflage, but we're mostly interested in the photos of the interior. Subaru has always taken flack for the lack of build quality its interiors displayed. However, nobody will be able to complain from now on.

The first thing we noticed is the steering wheel, trimmed in aluminum and wrapped in leather. The buttons have been carefully arranged on both sides, and half of them activate the numerous active safety systems (lane assist, front assist, adaptive cruise control, etc.).

We also noticed the paddles behind the steering wheel, likely used to control the CVT gearbox while it emulates the workings of a 6-speed automatic.

The engines for the Impreza will be new, but they will seem less important than the Subaru Global Platform. The Japanese automaker plans to use this new architecture on every model it sells, except of course the smaller kei cars.

The platform will use more ultra-high-strength steel to keep weight down and increase structural rigidity. Even with the camouflage, it's easy to notice the wheelbase of the car has been increased, and the front overhang is shorter.

As standard, the US-spec Impreza will be equipped with a 2-liter naturally aspirated boxer engine. However, the automaker may be forced to offer a downsized mill with more torque and lower fuel consumption.

The ideal candidate has been equipped on the Levorg wagon. It's a 1.6-liter horizontally-opposed direct injection turbo "DIT" that delivers 125kW (168 hp) and 250Nm (184 lb. ft torque).

Give us that one with standard AWD and a nice interior and you have our money, Subaru!
