The all-new Hyundai Genesis Coupe has been spotted undergoing winter testing for the first time in Northern Sweden, where extreme winter conditions can find flaws in any car's design. Of course, since the Coup' has already received a major mid-life facelift, we're looking at an all-new generation hidden under the guise of a test mule.
Hyundai's European engineering boffins are using a modified version of the current model to hide new mechanical bits, but a few interesting details can still be seen. The car will be a little longer ( both bumpers are extended) and wider in order to better compete with its rivals. Which rivals? Why, the 2015 Ford Mustang and 2016 Chevy Camaro, of course.
To fight the Yanks on even footing, the Korean coupe will receive its first V8 option, borrowing the 5-liter from the Genesis sedan and maybe even its in-house developed automatic gearbox. That engine is currently rated at 420 horsepower, though we could see power lifted to around 450 or so.
Hyundai has already dropped the turbo four-pot due to slow sales and says it wants to merge the Genesis Coupe with the premium feel of its bigger cars. That's why we could see the new HTRAC all-wheel-drive system being available in combination with a suite premium features that may bump prices well over $50,000.
Even though this is just a test mule, figuring out the styling isn't all that difficult, as the stunning HND-9 concept coupe shown in 2013 is likely to serve as a preview. Expect the unexpected to land in a Hyundai dealership near your towards the late part of 2016 or early 2017.
