As if by magic, the first pictures of the R8 V10 Spyder have appeared today, only about a week after rumors bout the Lamborghini Huracan Spyder also started circulating.
These photos are not exactly going to take you hours to understand, as the design of this speed machine is nearly identical. As was the case in 2014, when the TT Roadster came out, the only real difference is the shape of the roof.

Everything looks pretty much like we expected. When transitioning from coupé to convertible, the all-new R8 has lost its glass engine cover. The shape of the canvas roof resembles the wide arch of the fixed metal counterpart, but it's not fooling anybody.

Usually, about 20% of the structural rigidity is lost when the roof is cut. To compensate, Audi will have to install thicker front windshield braces, cross members for the middle of the underbody and some for the engine bay. All in all, we expect somewhere between 70 and 100 kilos of weight to be added.

540 or 610 hp

For the record, the all-new R8 is made largely from aluminum around a chassis shared with the Lamborghini Huracan. It's a bit longer and lower, so it will still feel sportier than the old R8 Spyder.

You won't be disappointed in the powertrain department either. For now, the R8 will only be available with the big V10 engine, the same one used by the Huracan. The Spyder will be available with two stages of tune, the base one with 540 hp we see here, and the V10 plus with 610 horsepower.

Rival from Stuttgart

That one could spell a whole lot of trouble for the Porsche 911 Turbo S Cabriolet, which happens to be the most expensive 911 model on sale at the moment. With a sticker price of nearly €210,000, this Stuttgart creation is pushing into supercar territory. It makes you wonder why somebody would spend that much on something with a boxer engine when they can have ten cylinders of awesomeness.

Little is known about the launch schedule of the all-new R8 V10 Spyder. But we think that it will come out next summer since most convertibles are sold around that time.

Sometime in the future, probably after the RS4 is launched, a new R8 base model will come out with a twin-turbo V6 engine.
