If you are a fan of Audi design and can look past the simpleton profile, Audi's current Q5 is still a looker with its oversized tailgate that engulfs the LED stop lights. However, the next one is going to be even better, as previewed by our latest spy images.
The spy photographers have put on their thickest winter parkas and went to check out what Audi is doing in Northern Europe. While Santa and his elves are busy making smartphone apps and Xboxes for kids, the Germans are in the neighborhood with their Mk2 Q5.

Will the adults be happy with their new SUV? Let's look past the camouflage and find out! Just like the 2016 A4, the Q5 looks more like a major facelift than a completely redesigned car. Especially from the back, it looks like they hired some lazy Porsche designers, who just pinched the lights and called them brand new. But the technology on offer will undoubtedly be more complex, as Audi's lighting package is among the best in the business.

From the front, the Q5 looks like a smaller Q7 thanks to its large hexagonal grille that will likely be chromed on the production model. Even though the front overhang is on the long side, the rake of the bumper means approach angles will be decent.

Most people will never take their Q5 off-roading. For them, performance, comfort and fuel economy are more important. Audi's latest modular MLB platform will help with all of those, giving the Q5 access to all the technologies used by the A4 and Q7.

A few of the 3.0-liter TDI engines will be carried over, three of them to be more precise. The 218 and 272 PS single-turbo versions will be matched to standard quattro and (probably) a 7-speed twin-clutch gearbox. A high-end twin-turbo with the potential for 340 PS will be installed in the SQ5, together with the famous ZF 8-speed automatic.

The 2.0 TDI will be offered with 150, 163 and 190 PS, some of them moving only the front wheels. In the gasoline department, we'll see a 2-liter TFSI with 190 PS installed on the Q5 ultra, as well as a 252 PS version. Further down the line, the single-turbo 3.0 TFSI from the all-new S4 will also become available, but only in America.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
