Spyshots: 2016 Renault Megane Shows New Details, Including LED Taillights

The rumor mill says we'll see the all-new Renault Megane at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. If that's true, there's no point in looking at these spyshots, since we'll see the camo come off in three weeks. Still, we're intrigued by some of the details being shown here.

The 2016 Megane will undoubtedly be a sexier hatchback than the somewhat awkward looking current model. It will also be lighter and more technologically advanced. But let's admit that nobody buys French cars because they are more advanced than the ones made by the Germans!

We begin our examination of the hind quarters of the prototype, where the taillights are shown for the first time. They appear to use LED technology, following the trend set by the Peugeot 308. It's just one example of how the compact car segment is becoming more competitive by the day.

The graphics are defined by a long C-curve at the bottom, while the plastic has a deep 3D effect, just like on the Porsche Macan. Way to step up your design game, Renault!

The front isn't too bad either, as the grille looks masculine and the oversized Renault diamond badge is a nice touch too. A large good defines the brow of the LED headlights and appears to have many sculptural creases.

Where we're getting less than expected is under the bonnet, as engineers have tried to make the new Megane as efficient as possible.

The engines

The Megane 4 will debut with one petrol engine, the 1.2-liter TCe 130, and two diesels, namely the 1.5-liter dCi 110 and the 1.6-liter dCi 130. All of them are already available, but they will get Eco-updates. Later on, a performance model with 160 horsepower will be added, but it will use a 1.6-liter twin-turbo diesel, just like the Astra.

There might also be a Megane GT, powered by the same TCe 200 engine as the Clio RS. So far, the future of the Megane RS looks unclear, but centers around a new 1.8-liter turbo engine developed with Nissan. Some say it will be mixed with electric goodies while others believe that won't happen before 2020.
