We recently caught the test mule in the adjacent images in the proximity of Chrysler’s Auburn Hills Technology Center. This is a test vehicle for the joint project that will bring us the next Mazda Miata / MX-5 and Alfa Romeo Spider.
At the moment, the engineers are driving a vehicle with the body of the current Mazda Miata, but this features multiple structural changes. These indicate that the future Mazda and Alfa Romeo open-top model will have a slightly elongated front overhang, probably serving safety purposes.
The wheelbase is also expected to grow - the changes to the body are also destined at boosting interior space, often a complain with the current Miata.
In the end, it seems that the silhouette of the Mazda Miata will morph into a design that follows the classic roadster proportions: a long hood, a hefty middle section and a short rear end.
Nevertheless, the vehicle is expected to lose weight, as the end result should tip the scales at around 2,300 lbs (1.050 kg).
Mazda and Alfa Romeo previously stated that the engines and the styling will be unique to each model, with the same being true for the engines. While the Italian is expected to borrow Fiat’s 1.4-liter MultiAir engine, Mazda is believed to be developing a new, turbocharged 1.3-liter SKYACTIV engine.
Both the next Mazda Miata / MX-5 and the Alfa Romeo Spider (perhaps named 2C) are expected to arrive in 2015. The two will also be differentiated in terms of pricing, with Alfa Romeo targeting the premium side of the market.
