While not a let-down in terms of equipment and practicality, the Kia Sorento SUV is one of the oldest-looking vehicles offed by the Koreans.
In 2010, the Sorento became the first model they offered to be made in the United States, after the $1 billion investment the Koreans made to build their West Point, Georgia, factory. No longer based on a truck frame, the 2011 model year Sorento came with unibody construction. For the 2014 model year, Kia gave it a significant update, introducing their 3.3-liter GDI V6 engine. The base LX and EX models now came with the 2.4-liter GDI, and the Sorento also switched to a six-speed automatic transmission with sport shift.
The Sorento prototype has emerged from Kia's European test center in Frankfurt. The engineers platform has been enlarged slightly in order to move it out of the way of the new 7-seater Santa Fe. The MkIII could mark a firm move into the D-segment.
A replacement is on the way, having just been photographed by our car spies this third generation Kia Sorento model appears to be a completely new kind design for the Koreans. The grille has a hint of Volvo with a splash of Tiger Shark, while the upper doors have that rounded look Volvo uses to project safety.
The next-gen SUV should adopt the latest 2.0 Turbo GDI engine and 2.4-liter hybrid system used by the Optima sedan.
Update: This is not the Sorento. Our spies have told us it's actually the next-generation Mohave or Borrego.
