While we're not inclined to agree with the CEO of Kia Motors Europe when he says the new Optima is the most beautiful car in its class, the wagon derivate is a welcomed sight.
After being previewed by the uber-sexy red Sportspace concept at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, the Optima Wagon is inching closer to its production debut. Our spy photographers stationed in Germany have just sent us another batch of images that seem to suggest a prototype with the auto parking function.
The bad news is that the single oval exhaust pipe seems identical to that of the 2016 Optima with the 1.7 U2 generation of the diesel engine. Delivering 141 PS, coupled with 340 Nm (250 lb-ft) of torque, this four-cylinder has everything the average European consumer needs. As a bonus, Kia now offers a 7-speed twin-clutch gearbox.
Kia has a gigantic batch of powertrains to choose from, all of them developed by Hyundai for the Sonata. Unfortunately, we can't confirm or deny that they will become available on the new Optima wagon since it's likely to be available in Europe. North American officials have previously said they don't want a wagon because it overlaps with the Sportage.
The Sonata is also available with a 1.6-liter turbo GDI making 180 PS and 264 Nm (194 lb-ft), a normal 2-liter engine, another 2-liter that runs on LPG, the hybrid drive, and the PHEV system. These last two engines will arrive under the Optima's hood, but only in the sedan.
Fortunately, Kia won't leave you wanting for power, as the 2.0-liter turbo of the Optima GT will make its way into the wagon. That means 245 PS from a 2.0-liter turbo and 6-speed automatic included.
As we've mentioned at the beginning of the story, this prototype seems to have the self-parking system included. Inside the Optima wagon, you'll get more soft-touch materials, a simpler driver-oriented design, more comfortable seats, as well as new tech. Geo-fencing (if the car exits a designated area, you will get a message), Speed Alert, Curfew Alert and Driving Score are among these new features.
