The current generation X1 has only bee the cheapest BMW sold in America for about a year, but in Europe it's much older than that. It so old, in fact, that it is due to be replaced by a new model next year.
Fans of BMW brand consider the X1 to be a really cool crossover because its platform is real-wheel drive based, unlike the Audi Q3 or Mercedes GLA. However, those BMW fans rarely buy X1s. Normal families with normal needs do that, and so the automaker is facing ever-stiffer competition from regular SUVs coming from non-premium brands.

Following in the footsteps of last week's BMW 2 Series Active Tourer, the X1 is also going for FWD-based architecture. This will result in more legroom and cargo space, hopefully a better entry price as well.

The engine range will likely be shared with the Active Tourer, which has the same platform. If we were to extrapolate those engines onto the X1, we'd end up with a range that sounds a little bit like this:

  • X1 16i with a 1.5-liter TwinPower Turbo Producing 136 hp
  • X1 18d with a 2.0-liter making 150 hp
  • X1 25i with a 2.0-liter making 231 hp

The less powerful engines will likely come only with front-wheel drive.

The proportions of this test car look great. This new X1 is a bit bigger, but it's also going to be lighter, more efficient and hopefully just as fast. The BMW X1 will also spawn an inevitable BMW X2 Sport Activity Coupe aimed at younger buyers who are willing to compromise for looks.
