The Buick Encore might be called a crossover, but it's smaller than a VW Beetle in length. However, it is more efficient than all the big boys, and it's about to get even better. We've just spotted a prototype that previews the mid-life facelift, and we think we know what's under the bonnet.
Currently, the Encore is powered by a 1.4-liter turbo with a US-spec rating of 138 hp. However, sister company Opel has just begun production of an all-new engine that's built using aluminum and features direct injection.

We're not going to bore you with the details, but know that the 2016 or 2017 Encore will have 148 hp (150 PS). Torque will also be increased to 245 Nm (180 lb-ft) delivered at 2,000 rpm, while fuel consumption will decrease.

How do we know the Buick Encore will get an Opel engine. Because the Encore/Mokka/Trax are built at the same factories and based on a platform derived from the Corsa D and Chevy Spark.

Other reports have suggested Buick will launch an entry-level Encore equipped with a 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine. However, we think that's total bull, since the smaller Fiesta is barely selling with its 1.0 EcoBoost.

Cosmetic changes will also be made. Under the camouflage at the front is Buick's new design language. New headlights, grille and a sharper bumper will be installed. We may also have extra safety systems under there because the Encore can cost as much as a Mercedes CLA.

There isn't any camouflage around the back, so that might not change. But designers might turn their attention towards the taillight graphics. Inside, the crossover will receive an IntelliLink touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.
