Just a few days after Renault took the new Twingo RS out for a spin, the engineers over at Smart decided to test their version of the same powertrain, which in their case wears the Brabus badge.
Yes folks, this is the new Smart Fortwo Brabus, combining the practicality of a car you can park perpendicular to the curb with the biggest name in the world of Mercedes-Benz tuning.
Virtually undisguised from head to toe, this brand new Smart model features the same black bumper that we envisioned in July, when we published a rendering of the car. Around the back, there's a twin exhaust system, which some may consider overkill for a car with well under 150 hp. Still, it looks as angry and aggressive as a pitbull.
It is yet unclear if this testing prototype is a full production car, especially since the exhaust resonator is quite an unsightly vision that's usually obscured by the bumper of rear diffuser. But we can tell that company engineers have upgraded the suspension and fitted wider tires.
Built around an all-new platform shared with the Twingo 3, the Fortwo by Brabus will likely feature a tuned version of a Renault engine. This is either going to be a 0.9 3-cylinder turbo producing around 115 hp or a bigger 1.2-liter four-cylinder that should be able to make about 130 hp.
Power was never an issue for the previous generations of shrunken Brabus, handling was. That's why we're pleased to report that the width of the car has increased, which should help cornering stability. For the first time ever, the smallest of Brabus models will be available with a manual gearbox, something fans have been demanding for years.
Some might not understand why a heavily customized city car with a body kit and bucket leather-clad seats can fetch over €30,000. But the baby Brabus is the coolest thing invented since velcro shoes and rich Mercedes drivers in search of a city runnabout will flock to its side.
