Land Rover has just updated the LR2/Freelander for the 2013 model year with LEDs and more kit, but they won't kid themselves – it's old and it needs to be replaced. After all, this supposedly compact SUV can weigh the almost 2 tons.
Having been on the market since the 2007 model year, the LR2 will be replaced by the car you see right here, spotted by our spies undergoing road testing.

The 2015 model year will drop the Freelander name in Europe, as Land Rover is switching to a more universal alphanumeric naming system. Besides the naming change, there's also a size change on the way, as rumors suggest the LR2 might be merged with the LR4 into a single model, available with either five or seven seats.  This is because the Evoque is selling well and overlaps with the LR2, and so there's no need for another bespoke compact SUV. You can see from these photos, the vehicle is absolutely huge. Power will come from either a 2-liter turbo with 240 hp, 3-liter supercharger or 3-liter diesel in Europe.

Our sources say the full reveal of the car will take place at a major auto show towards the very end of the year, either at the Paris or in November at the LA Auto Show. Production will start in December, with global distribution starting the following month.
