From taking the kids to school to that sheep herder in rural England, Land Rover has built a powerful name for itself with people needing to tackle the rough stuff. However, with more and more competitors clambering for a slice of the market, the humble Freelander is struggling in the sales charts.
The Brits are working on a whole new generation though, which continues to be tested up against the most difficult weather condition imaginable somewhere in Northern Sweden. Our spy photographers were once again able to snap photos of the prototype, this time from much closer up, ensuring some of the details are in full view.
With a wide hood acting like a brow, the design of the baby Discovery is typical Evoque. That sport character is also visible looking at the raked windshield and the curvature of the roof. At the back, it looks like the lights are all-LED and that big spoiler added to the tailgate is an integral part of the design.
Land Rover has not let spit any details about this model probably because it needs it to be a class leader in most areas. But we think it rides on a big version of the LR-MS platform and should get only 2-liter turbo petrol and diesel engines. There's a chance the Freelander and Defender will be rolled up into a single model, offering either 5- or 7-seat configurations.
We'll know for sure later in the year, when the Brits are ready to loosen their jaws closer to the debut.
