With a Mercedes ML camera car following its every action, the brand new Kia Soul EV made a cameo appearance in the streets of California, in preparation for its official debut in the coming months. Wearing absolutely no camouflage for an official photo shoot, Kia's first electric car in North America looks very cool.
An interesting color combination of very light teal blue and creamy white makes the Soul EV look inoffensive but at the same time techie and modern. The trademark tiger nose grille has been filled out with shiny plastic, being one part aerodynamic aid and one part cover for the charging port.
With color added to the headlights, a funky looking greenhouse and painted wheel, the Soul EV makes Nissan's Leaf look like an toaster on wheels.
Since Kia has never built an electric car for the mass market before (there is a kei car in Asia though), it will be interesting to see if they can match the Leaf for range and reliability. Rumors suggest that power for the electric Soul will come from a 110 hp engine with 210 lb-ft of instataneous torque. The automaker is said to be aiming for a range of 124 miles, or 200 km, on a full charge.
