Spyshots: 2014 W222 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Almost Undisguised

Mercedes will most likely show the new S-Class saloon on home turf on May 15th. As a result of this and the fact that it's been photographed completely undisguised, this test vehicle came out today wearing only minimal black camo over the lights and badges.

In fact, the camo came off so recently that little bits of it remained stuck on. That's not realy a problem though, as this is one sexy halo saloon, the 600 era. The German equivalent of a Rolls Royce shows a new design direction, with soft edges and purposeful curves replacing the old hard-edged style.

The W222 will have very big shoes to fill when it arrives, not its predecessor's, but the ones belonging to Maybach. Pullman models will pick up the slack, with a little help from the best designo leathers and clever German engineering.

The engine range will include some familiar units and some new, quite revolutionary ones. Most customers will go for a refined and powerful S550 with a twin-turbo engine. Mercedes will also introduce a twin-turbo 3-liter V6 on the S-Class, as well as the E- and C-. That will have 333 PS and could be a viable alternative for people who don't want massive performance but still need a flexible, long-legged powertrain.

What we've seen with the E-Class facelift tells us the S63 AMG could also become a 585 PS all-wheel drive hoot, a true Audi A8 alternative. Diesels will also be offered, but for the true fuel-sippers, a a plug-in hybrid model will offer them the lowest emissions possible and a decent EV range for city driving. Such a car is especially important for company cars who need low emissions cars to reduce taxation. And once you think about it, running in total silence is what the S-Class is supposed to do anyway.
