Few people will know this or care, but the S60 is a relatively new idea for Volvo. Only two generation exist, the current and h old one, produced from 2000 until 2009. Compared to that relatively prehistoric model, the current sedan is as modern as it gets.
In fact, few cars Volvo has on offer can compete. But the Swedish carmaker has ambitious growth plans and has decided to refresh the S60 for the 2014 model year.

This prototype was captured by our spy photographers in Northern Europe, as it's undergoing cold weather testing. The only part of the car that appears to be different is the front end. There, we could see a similar look to that shown on the new V40 compact hatchback, which would facilitate their brand identity.

The rear appears to be the same, though it could receive new graphics for the taillights, not that there's anything wrong with the ones it's got on right now. Changes are visible on the inside of the S60 as well. The model that could debut less than a year from now will have the more modern cluster of the V40, with a large rev counter in the middle and a speed display spaced inside that as a digital screen.

We can't imagine what sort of new engines could go into the S60, since all the V40's units are already available under its hood. However, there might be some small tweaks to increase fuel economy.
