Just like the hatchback market has moved on from the three-door Golf I to the comfortable and refined Golf VII, so too has the hot hatch game. From the first generation Golf GTI, that had a 1.6-liter fuel injected engine, the hottest Golf today has a 2.0-liter turbo, which is expected to push 280 hp in the next Golf R.
The MkVII Golf has finally been revealed last week, ahead of its debut at the Paris Motor Show, and so the new Golf R has shed its camo in order to fully test its performance without being burdened by the baggy covers.
The powertrain for the new R will of course include a 2.0-liter Turbo and AWD, but speculation has placed output at anywhere between 280 and 300 hp. After all, the hothatch market is heating up, with Mercedes joining the fighting with the A45 AMG, also an AWD monster.
VW engineers still have time to decide on how much boost to give the engine, as the Golf R still has another year or so of testing to go. This early prototype features a regular Golf VII body but offers a glimpse into the quad exhaust setup.
