Spyshots: 2014 Nissan Qashqai First Photos

Launched in 2007, the Qashqai crossover almost singlehandedly kept Nissan's sales up during one of the worst economic downturns in European history. The best-selling hero has received plenty of updates and remains competitive six years after its launch, but a replacement is desperately needed.

These photos show the second-generation Qashqai spotted for the first time in Europe. Engineers have covered it in heavy camouflage to ensure we don't see the car before it's ready to be revealed. Recent reports suggest the new Qashqai will be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September.

Production will start at the sunderland plant in December 2013, with deliveries to take place early in 2014.

Beyond the futuristic looking design which is going to be similar to the Hi-Cross concept, the new Quashqai will also offer fresh technology. The basic 1.6-liter petrol engine will be swapped for a 1.2-liter direct injection gasoline supercharged (DIG-S) three-cylinder engine producing 100 hp, which will also feature automatic stop/start when the car is stationary improving fuel economy by around four per cent.

The new 1.6 dCi diesel launched about a year ago on Nissan and Renault cars will be kept, but it will see its emissions lowered from the current 119 to below 100 grams per kilometer of CO2. We don't yet know if the 1.5 dCi will also be offered, but considering it's much cheaper to make than the 1.6, we'd say the 1.5 dCi 110 is safe for the next few years.
